OHIO-BASED CANTON UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP
Canton Elevator, Inc., of North Canton, Ohio, has been acquired by Nidec Motor Corp., the St. Louis subsidiary of Nidec Corp. of Japan. Nidec noted the transaction will further enhance its elevator and drive systems portfolio, in turn increasing its competitiveness in that area. In 2012, Nidec Motor Corp. acquired Kinetek Group Inc., renaming it Nidec Kinetek Corp. Founded in 1946, Canton has approximately 100 employees.
 
HISTORIC STRIKE AT HW PLANT IN ILLINOIS
Approximately 240 union employees of Hollister-Whitney Elevator Corp.’s (HW) Quincy, Illinois, location went on strike on December 2, representing the first strike involving Machinists Local 822 and HW in more than 30 years, the Herald-Whig reports. On December 3, a union spokesman said no contract talks were scheduled. The most recent five-year contract between Local 822 and HW was ratified in 2011. The company employs approximately 300 people who work at multiple locations in an industrial park in Quincy.
 
PROPOSED TOWER WOULD BE ATLANTIC CANADA’S TALLEST
Francis Fares, developer of the King's Wharf mixed-use project on the harbor in the Dartmouth area of Halifax, Canada, hopes to start construction in late 2017 on a 36-story hotel/condominium tower that would be the tallest in Atlantic Canada, CBC Radio Canada reports. The current tallest building east of Montreal is the 33-story Fenwick Tower in Halifax. The new tallest, Marisella, would be part of the King's Wharf masterplan and include a hotel on the first 11 floors with condos and amenities above.
