NOTE/DISCLAIMER (Will Clawson, 11 May 2020):
We included video and audio of a steam calliope being played on this episode. After we posted it, Casey Hayden at WWUAS Productions sent us a message that he recognized the tune as a Confederate marching song called “Dixie.”
While the audio included here is instrumental and many people in the American South would identify it solely as a folk tune, the truth is that both the original and Confederate-adapted lyrics to this song are deeply White Supremacist in nature. I plan to go into more detail in a segment on the next history episode.
For the time being, I’m choosing not to remove these clips because I feel that we can better serve our purpose as an educational program by having these conversations instead of covering up our mistakes.
I appreciate all of you for listening. Please get in touch with us for comments or corrections using the contact info available on the WWUAS Productions website.
Thanks!
