(Kirtland Polygamy, 1835–36)
Joseph entered his first plural marriage, to Fanny Alger, while living in Kirtland. Little is known about this short marriage except that it didn’t turn out well.
During this period, Joseph reported a visitation from the prophet Elijah who gave Joseph the keys to seal marriages through the eternities. Despite the importance of visitation, Joseph Smith apparently did not publicly teach eternal marriage for perhaps six years after he received the authority to perform those ordinances.
