Though the Doubleday myth credited Abner Doubleday with its invention, baseball’s origins are more complex, with influences from British rounders and other European games.
The sport gained national prominence in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the formation of professional leagues and the first World Series in 1903. It has endured significant historical moments, including the Black Sox Scandal of 1919, the breaking of the color barrier by Jackie Robinson in 1947, and the steroid era of the late 1990s.
Baseball expanded globally, with leagues in Latin America, Japan, and Korea, and international competitions like the World Baseball Classic. Despite modern challenges, the game continues to adapt, maintaining its place in American and global sports culture.
