Publisher's Summary:
William Hoffer - handsome, refined, a little cold perhaps - is an established figure in London society.
But Hoffer has secrets. He is vague about his Midwestern origins. The counsel he offers a Russian billionaire may extend to murkier topics than art investments. Then there is his Kensington flat, which is only rented, and the broader question of his money, which is running out.
When a ghost from his past in Mexico surfaces, Hoffer is forced to revive brutal instincts for self-preservation....
Hoffer is an amoral thriller of intelligence, wit and style, and a coruscating commentary on the world we live in now.
Critic Reviews:
"Glencross is blisteringly gifted - funny and brilliant - and tells a great, gripping story about the beautiful monsters of the London super-elite." (David Lipsky)
"An intricately plotted novel of international intrigue that reads like a wickedly inspired collaboration by the young Evelyn Waugh, Patricia Highsmith, and Martin Amis. His prose glitters like a dagger, propelling us through a maze of deceptions and unexpected revelations." (Joyce Carol Oates)
Members Reviews:
What a wonderful, engrossing
What a wonderful, engrossing, fun and creepily compelling book. The comparisons with Patricia Highsmith are spot on, but Hoffer is all the more riveting because it's of our time. Glencross's eye for detail and social nuance is remarkable; reading the book is like escaping into a completely different and absorbing world.
The transfixing fixer. 4.5*
âI knew Camilla Rhodes-Thorpe took a dim view of me; in fact it was the only thing I really admired about her.â
Hoffer is a tricky-to-categorise novel: part thriller, part spy caper, part satire, part literary page-turner. Our 51-year old eponymous narrator is cool, clever â and broke. Advisor to the cream of high society and under the protection of one of the Russian oligarchyâs biggest cheeses, Hoffer is an amoral fixer of enigmatic allure. But when his dubious past catches up with him in the shape of a young Mexican girl he finds in his Kensington flat, will he be able to fix his own predicament?
The cast-list is a veritable whoâs who of London and international society although I frequently found myself asking whoâs who? Confusion aside, this is a highly enjoyable read that delivers characters, plot, punch and pace, as well as setting itself up as a possible âfirst in a seriesâ. I do hope so. Itâs not often one comes across such an attractive, morally ambiguous anti-hero. Catch him if you can.
