BIBLE DIG: Archaeology

HOLIDAY SPECIAL: "Jeshua Sheepskin"

Listen Later

Rams (male sheep) are a prevailing theme throughout The Bible. One of the biblical words for ram occurs 164 times and in all time periods. These cherished creatures met Israel’s need for food, clothing and sacrifice. Ram skins, dyed red, were the inner covering of The Tabernacle where God’s presence dwelt. Another Hebrew word for ram also means “ram’s horn” or “Jubilee year”. The ram’s horn (‘shofar’) was blown like a trumpet to gather for worship, to sound a battle alarm, to announce a new king and to proclaim the year of Jubilee—when fields were rested, land was returned to its original owner and slaves were set free.

Shepherds are an equally important theme in The Bible. Adam’s son Abel was a shepherd. Moses spent 40 years shepherding sheep in the wilderness before he led Israel for 40 years in the wilderness. The shepherd boy, David, defeated Goliath with a slingshot—still the favorite weapon of Bedouin shepherds. Jesus went into great detail describing himself as The Good Shepherd. And the greatest manuscript discovery in modern times began when the Dead Sea Scrolls were uncovered by a young boy who was—appropriately enough—a shepherd.

This parable, therefore, is based on the life of Jesus Christ. A timeless tale retold in a new yet strangely familiar world. A world where angels are eagles and demons are snakes. Where Romans are wolves whose Empire is the wolf lands. Jews are sheep, waiting for their savior Shepherd. Simon Peter is known as a ram named Stone. Another ram, Benedict, symbolizes Judas Iscariot. And Jeshua Sheepskin represents Jesus Christ.
