What if we stopped seeing fever as something to immediately fear—and instead understood what the body is actually trying to do?
In this episode, I’m joined by Barbara Roberts, a registered pharmacist and homeopath who brings a fascinating perspective from both conventional and complementary healthcare.
Together, we explore one of the things parents often find most challenging: fevers in children. We talk about what a fever is doing in the body, why it can be an important part of the immune response, how to support a child through it, and—just as importantly—when to seek medical help.
Barbara also shares her journey from growing up with homeopathy to becoming a pharmacist and later training as a homeopath, and how she brings these two worlds together in her work today.
In this episode, we discuss:
• What a fever is actually doing in the body and its role in the immune response
• Why watching the child, rather than focusing solely on the thermometer, can give us valuable information
• Important signs that tell us it's time to seek medical help
• Why parental intuition matters when something simply doesn't feel right
• Practical ways to keep a feverish child comfortable
• Rest, reassurance, skin-to-skin contact and the idea of a child's "right to be sick"
• Common homeopathic fever remedies including Aconite, Belladonna and Pulsatilla, and how to tell them apart
• How often to repeat a remedy during an acute illness—and when to stop
• Barbara's perspective as a pharmacist on paracetamol and ibuprofen
• Why the cause or aetiology of an illness can be an important clue when choosing a homeopathic remedy
• How conventional medicine and homeopathy can sit alongside one another rather than having to be an either/or choice
Barbara and I also share stories from our own families and practices that illustrate just how differently children can experience a fever—and why observing the individual child is so important.
Ultimately, Fever Without Fear is about helping parents replace some of the anxiety around fever with knowledge, observation and confidence.
Supporting a fever doesn't mean doing nothing. It's about understanding what the body is doing, knowing how to support your child, and recognising when it's time to seek additional help.
