The Golden Age of Hollywood implemented the Hays code which had "moral" standards for films. The code was not perfect and had many flaws - mainly in terms of racism. However, at the time it was the only standard which prohibited violence, sex, and nudity in films. After 40 years of this standard there was a shift, and films started to go in a different direction.
