The story follows a trouble-shooter—a man who has erased his identity from the global database—who is hired to investigate a mysterious case. Years ago, a sentient space-exploration robot, known as the Hangman, was launched into deep space. Now, it has unexpectedly returned to Earth, and one of its original creators has died under suspicious circumstances.
