Honest Reflection

In the Corinthian church, there is a man who has his father's wife. In their arrogance, the church has chosen not to do anything about it, thus endangering both the man involved in sin and other members of the group. Members of the church must take on the identity of a servant. This requires the same humility that we see in Jesus and Paul. In chapters 2 and 3 of 1st Corinthians, Paul continues to illustrate the importance of godly wisdom. Paul recounts his introduction to the group in Corinth and reminds them of his desire for them to not remember the power and wisdom of God, not his eloquence. He continues to point out the need for the church to be rooted in Christ and not anyone else; otherwise, they may fail when the testing comes. The church in Corinth was a growing church. In Acts 18, we read about the success Paul and others had in Corinth as they taught people about Jesus. By the time of 1 Corinthians, the growth continued. The church was also experiencing some problems. So much so that Paul needed to write to the church to give them wisdom on how to address the issues. The book of Mark concludes with Jesus' trial, crucifixion, and resurrection. Jesus proves His authority over the kingdoms of this world and death by being resurrected after a brutal and torturous death. He ends the gospel by telling His disciples to continue the mission and to make disciples by baptizing and teaching them to observe Jesus commands. In Mark 14, Jesus' physical life is coming to an end. The leaders have developed a plot to arrest and kill Him and will be assisted by one of Jesus' closest disciples. When Jesus entered Jerusalem, He was disappointed in what He found. Whether it was abuse in the temple or the combative nature of the religious leaders, Jesus did not find the good fruit that He was expecting in the temple or in Jerusalem as a whole. In Mark 13, His disciples are in awe of the outward appearance of the temple, and Jesus responds by telling them that the temple and the soon-to-be obsolete systems would soon be taken down. The King enters Jerusalem, and He is again met with mixed reactions. Some praise Jesus with shouts of "Hosanna!" The religious leaders stand in opposition through their questioning and ultimately their intent to kill Jesus. In Mark 10, Jesus has some difficult things to say. Some of these statements shock His disciples. Other statements cause people to go away sad. Jesus' loving challenges are a normal part of life under His authority, and how we respond to them says a lot about whether we truly value Him or not. In Mark chapter 9, Jesus continues to teach His disciples. From events like the Transfiguration, we see that Jesus has authority even over the Law and the Prophets. His teachings continue to emphasize that His authority will be used to do the will of the Father. All of this is to instruct His disciples how they should wield their authority in the future as they strive to live like children in the kingdom.
