While the elections were for “municipal councilors” who really don’t have much authority, the Hong Kong elections were a stunning defeat for President Xi of China and a strong show of support by average Hong Kongers for the protestors.  The United States and President Trump should continue to support the freedom movement in Hong Kong, even in trade talks with China.
