“HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER”
The first Top Ten List in history is known as the Ten Commandments (or the Decalogue) and it is found first in Exodus 20 and also in Deuteronomy 5.
In summary, the first four commandments are about our relationship with God:
• You shall have no other gods before Me.
• You shall not make idols.
• You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.
• Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
The fifth commandment is where it transitions from God to neighbor, with the first priority being family. #5 – Honor your father and your mother
We pick up with how we deal relationally with others in commandments six through ten:
• You shall not murder.
• You shall not commit adultery.
• You shall not steal.
• You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
• You shall not covet.
When Jesus came along, his followers asked him, “What is the greatest commandment?” His response: To love god and love people.
1. We Establish a Habit of Honor
2. We Learn to Love
3. The Byproduct is Blessing
Here’s the formula: Honor + Love = Blessing
The Hebrew word for Honor from the Old Testament is “Kabbed.”
It literally means heavy or weighty.
We must debunk the If/Or Theory of Honor.
There are three ways we honor our parents:
1. With our tongues
2. Through our time
3. In our tasks
Honor is a choice. It is a choice that comes with no conditions or caveats. Honor is something that begins internally and manifests itself externally.
