on today’s show - I’ll be ranking the top 10 players in the NBA who I think could get closest to scoring 81 points in a game if the circumstances were right.
Inspired by Shaquille O’Neal, who earlier this season listed his top five.
Why 81?
On January 22, 2006, A 27-year-old Kobe Bryant put together one of the greatest individual performance seen on a basketball court. He scored 81 points, including 55 in the second half, in a 122-104 victory over the Toronto Raptors.
Kobe became just the second player to ever break the 80-point threshold, joining the legendary Wilt Chamberlain to form an elite group of two.
It’s possible that it may never be reached again. Put in this modern era of space, pace, 3-point shooting and players taking the regular season off defensively - the environment is set for history to be re-made.
This not a Who’s the better player ranking - far from it - were looking at these guys purely as scorers. Where do KD, Kyrie, Harden and Lillard rank?
