Interesting look at lives on the edge...

"CaringBridge" is a website started by Sona Mehring about 15 years ago. It is home to blogs by people who are facing medical issues and use their site to update friends and family on their on-going treatments. I discovered the site about six years ago when my beloved sister-in-law was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer. Her blog was as wonderful and inspirational as she was, and ended at her death three years ago. Since discovering the CaringBridge website, I've known a few other people who have chronicled their "battles" with disease on its pages.

Mehring has put together a shortish book which uses some of the Caringbridge stories. There are people with illnesses, people who have been injured in accidents, and people who've found inspiration in other's pages. The stories mostly have happy endings, or as "happy" as someone who's been badly injured can have. A few have ended in the death of the person in the pages, but not many. The last story was written by a woman with pancreatic cancer who died soon after completing her story. Her CaringBridge blog gives a bit about those who loved her and how they observed her death.

The book is as well written as the individual blogs are. Many stress the religious side of illness and death. The stories are as personal and moving as you'd expect them to be. The takeaway from almost every single one of them is that disease and accidents are horribly...random. Mehring's book is an interesting look at all sections of society when that randomness in life happens.

I haven't read the whole book yet, but have really been inspired with what I have read..This is a very good book for me to read, as my spouse passed away May 31, 2012...And I am very lonely at times....

Both heartwrenching and inspiring

Gripping stories, but not always easy to read. These are real people facing real challenges, so be prepared for some real gut twisting as they share their raw emotions. Amazing how people are able to find hope in their darkest hours. Worth the time.
