Israel wanted to be just like the nations around itself instead of being the nation God called it to be. It is tempting for us to want what others have instead of focusing on our calling. Saul didn't understand who God was or what pleased God, and that caused him to suffer. God wants us to come to Him first and have a strong relationship so that we can move boldly forward in our life.

Eli was the priest that was supposed to serve God and guide the people, but we can see that he doesn't fulfill his duties well.
