Today’s Scripture:
Psalms 23:4 NIV
Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
In our low places, we sense loneliness; in our valleys, we sense fear, hopelessness, rejection, and abandonment. In the valley, there's a sense of vulnerability, exposure to predators, targeted. We feel like we are on the enemy's menu; we are his prey, and he's coming after us. There are times when we are in the valley, in a low place, in a place called Lo-debar, a place where nothing good can come of it. We are ashamed, afraid, and scared. We look to our left and right, and there's no one there. We are all alone.
David said that even though he walked through this type of valley, he would fear no evil. Why did David say this when evil was all around him? David knew something. He had been with the Lord, and he knew that even though he was walking through a hard, dark, and valley season, he was not alone.
Yes, no one is to his right or to his left, but he knows he's not alone. He says, for you are with me. Who? Is he crazy, talking to himself? No one is there but David. No, he's not crazy, and neither are you, but you must tell yourself in your valley season, in your low place, when no one is there, I am not alone. God is with me. This is our hope and our security; God is with us. For you are with me, I will not fear. I know it helps to have another person there, and it helps to have someone to call and talk to, but when that's not present, remember that He is present; his presence makes the difference. David said I will fear no evil; you are with me.
The presence of God means more to David than the darkness of his valley. David had hope in the valley because of who was with him- Yahweh. The God of Israel. He is also with you. Don't be afraid of the terror by night. The night gets dark, and some nights are darker than others, and we cannot seem to find our way, but when we know that God's presence is with us, we can deal with the darkness, and we can have hope for better in the dark.
You have light in the valley; in the darkness, he is your light. His presence gives you illumination and direction. I will fear no evil; light has come, and when light comes, darkness disappears. You shall fear no evil. Your light is walking with you in the valley.
God is in the storm with you, he's in the valley with you, and he's never going to leave you unprotected. You are not alone; his presence is near.
