A departure from the usual format this episode — today's quote comes from fiction, not a real person. But fiction can move us just as deeply, and this line from Charlie Kaufman's unsettling film (based on the novel by Iain Reid) deserves the same careful attention we give to philosophers and historical figures. The claim is bleak on its surface: hope isn't transcendent truth, it's a human invention built to cope with the unique burden of knowing our own mortality. We take that claim seriously, examine where it holds up and where it doesn't, and bring in Viktor Frankl's observations from inside Auschwitz to ask a deeper question: does calling hope an invention make it any less real, or any less necessary? Sometimes the most useful reflections come from the places we don't expect them.
