English: This is a pencil illustration by Spencer Alexander McDaniel that was started on 26 April 2020 and completed on 7 May 2020. It depicts the scene from the Gospel of Mark 5:1-20 in which Jesus exorcizes many demons from a man at a location described as "the country of the Gerasenes." In making this illustration, the artist drew some very loose inspiration from an early sixth-century AD mosaic in the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo in Ravenna, Italy. The artist based his portrayal of Jesus's appearance on his own analysis of the historical sources, which is presented in this article he published in March 2020. The appearance of the demon-possessed man in this illustration is based on how he is described in the Gospel of Mark. The patterns around the borders of the illustration are based on patterns from Byzantine art. The demons in this illustration are meant to be symbolic rather than realistic and are meant to appear bizarre and otherworldly.
