Q: What is it with men, and their obsession with anal? 

If you feel like everyone’s obsessed with butt stuff you aren’t imagining things: anal was the 8th most searched term and 6th most viewed category on Pornhub in 2021. What’s driving the current “obsession”? How do you communicate with sexual partners whether you’re into it or not?

A study of 130 UK teens between 16-18 showed that “that most teens' anal sex experiences occurred in a relationship setting, BUT first experiences with anal sex were rarely under circumstances of mutual exploration of sexual pleasure.”  Most of the time, it was boys pushing girls to try anal sex, though a number of the boys and men reported pressure to engage in anal sex from their male friends. In addition, there was an expectation that boys would feel pleasure and girls would feel pain from anal, but that wasn’t a disincentive.

“It can feel like you are aboard the sex train, destination anal town, and there’s nothing you can do about it… But actually, your sex train is going to wherever you want it to go, and anal town is a little side loop that you can choose to take if you want to. It’s not an inevitability.” - Melody

Audience Q: He takes a really long time to climax every time. What are the possible reasons? 

Melody and Elena call in the big guns (Elena’s Dad Nic - an actual sex and relationships therapist) to answer the questions within this question: What is ‘too long’ when it comes to cumming? What might be causing it? And how can you work together to make sure everyone involved is enjoying sex, rather than enduring it?

“One of the really good outcomes of having any sort of sexual difficulty in a relationship is that it starts the conversation… If you want to have good sex for a lifetime you’ve got to learn how to do this at some point because, if you live long enough, you will run into barriers in your sex life. So developing the skills and confidence to have these conversations is vital.”

“If you’re gonna put yourself out there in that way… You’ll want to do a little bit of thinking around how you cope with rejection, and making sure that you’re in a place where if someone is not into it you can be like ‘Cool, that’s not me’.”

“People think that no strings attached means that it’s depersonalised. You can’t share anything emotional, you can’t talk about things, you have to contain yourself because you can get hurt… But you can have really good casual sex and also have a good conversation with someone.”

For me, it’s one of the many fun and exciting things about sex - we have this somewhat altered state that means sensations and types of interactions become super juicy and we can exist in a way that we wouldn’t normally.” - Elena Beets
