Hot Pursuits is the 5th song on the album, it is where things first started to heat up right before I wrote my prog masterpiece Stay and Never Leave. I wanted a fast paced break neck rocker of a song and wanted to give the vibe that you were in a car chase with crashes and explosions happening along the way, hence the original song title, “City Level”. Punctuated by slower moments of reflection that seemed spiritual. And then shifting gears one more time into over drive before slamming through a wall careening over a cliff in slow motion.
The song started as a simple collection of random programmed drums. I was still out of town and I didn’t have a guitar on me at the time I started working on this track so I used guitar loops, sorry if that’s cheating 🙏!
However, once I got home I had the idea to try and use my keyboard for the first time. After plugging away for a few hours with no real intention I had actually created something special. For the first time I had created a song that gave me goosebumps… the final chorus section deeply moved me. My enthusiasm for the project had flared, I had unlocked a creative side of me that had been lying dormant. Before this project I had only written and composed music on guitar, which I finally realized was physically limiting.
Even though I had run into so much failure, this was a resounding victory and this song is a reminder and celebration of breaking past your limits, especially when your back is against the wall.
