Welcome to the Houston News Update for Saturday, June 7th, 2025. I'm Morgan Riley, bringing you the latest from our vibrant city.
Word on the streets of Houston is that the City Council has made a significant decision this week, passing Mayor Whitmire's $7 billion budget plan for Fiscal Year 2026 with a vote of 14-3. The budget, which takes effect next month on July 1st, includes $122 million in strategic cuts without reducing city services, pay raises for police, fire, and municipal employees, and unprecedented investments in public safety. Mayor Whitmire has emphasized that this budget marks a turning point for Houston, putting the city on stronger financial footing after a year of addressing significant budget challenges.
In crime news, Houston police have arrested 34-year-old Jaggard Bouldin in connection with a fatal shooting outside Big Red's Lounge in north Houston. Bouldin has been charged with murder in the death of 48-year-old Eric West following an altercation on May 17th. According to police, the two men got into a fight when Bouldin allegedly opened fire, shooting West multiple times before fleeing the scene on foot. West was transported to a hospital in a private vehicle but was later pronounced deceased. Bouldin was arrested on Wednesday and is now in Harris County Jail.
For those of you planning your weekend, we're looking at typical early June weather for Houston—warm and humid with temperatures reaching the low 90s. It's a perfect opportunity to check out some local community events happening around town.
Looking ahead, the new fiscal year beginning July 1st will bring several changes to Houston, including $184 million dedicated to streets and drainage improvements and a $12 million boost to the Budget Stabilization Fund. These changes reflect what Mayor Whitmire calls "a new chapter in building a stronger, more accountable, and more resilient Houston."
As we reflect on these developments, it's clear that our city continues to face challenges but is taking meaningful steps to address them. These budget decisions will impact every neighborhood and community across Houston, showing how local governance directly affects our daily lives.
