Welcome to Houston News Update for Friday, May 16th, 2025. I'm Morgan Riley, bringing you the stories that matter most to our city.

Word on the streets of Houston is that federal authorities have been busy this week. The Department of Homeland Security announced on Tuesday that they've deported over 500 people and arrested more than 400 suspected undocumented immigrants during a weeklong operation in our area. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Houston Field Office Director Bret Bradford stated this initiative will save taxpayers millions of dollars annually. The operation involved multiple agencies, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

In transportation news, tragedy struck on the Eastex Freeway last week when a single-car crash resulted in the death of a passenger and injuries to the driver. Houston police reported the fiery accident, which serves as a sobering reminder to stay vigilant on our roadways.

As temperatures climb into the mid-to-upper 90s, Texas's power grid faces its first major test of the season. Energy experts predict our electric grid will withstand this early summer-like heat, with solar power boosting capacity. Many Houstonians are already cranking up their air conditioners, so let's hope those predictions hold true.

Looking ahead to community events, this Saturday will be bustling with activities across the city. Discovery Green hosts iFest USA 2025 from 3:30 to 9:00 PM, celebrating global cultures with live entertainment, diverse cuisine, and cultural booths – all with free admission. If you're in Katy, check out the Katy Exchange at Historic Town Square from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, where you can support local businesses and explore handmade goods while enjoying live music.

For families with fifth-graders, there's exciting news that nearly 40,000 Houston students will experience live theater for free during the upcoming 2025-2026 season – a wonderful cultural opportunity for our young people.

As our city continues to evolve, these stories reflect Houston's dynamic nature – from policy changes affecting our communities to cultural celebrations that bring us together. In times of challenge and celebration, it's our connections to each other that make Houston special.
