I’m a solo entrepreneur, and a little over a year ago I was feeling very alone in running my business. I would see other companies who had partners or teams working together, and I was feeling a little jealous. I would have loved to have a group of people to help me brainstorm ideas, or tell me if I’m doing things the right way, or help keep me accountable for reaching my goals. But I was all alone; it was just me.

Then I joined a mastermind group, and everything changed.

What is a mastermind group?

A mastermind group is a group of like-minded entrepreneurs who come together for brainstorming, education, support, and accountability. A mastermind group helps you achieve success in your business. Members challenge each other to set powerful goals and then hold each other accountable for reaching those goals.

A mastermind group can meet in person or online. The group I’m in has members in Ohio, Connecticut, Washington, and Oregon and we meet via Zoom every other week. Technology really helps with our group.

We’re not tied to a physical location, we don’t have to leave the house and drive somewhere, so our time is maximized. We’re all busy entrepreneurs so being able to meet virtually is super helpful.

How a mastermind group works

Most mastermind groups work roughly the same way – each person gets a chance to share their current status and follow-up on commitments made during the last meeting.

One person is typically in the “hot seat” each meeting where they get extra time to ask questions, talk about their challenges, and then get advice and direction from the other group members.

And there’s usually one person who acts as the facilitator, keeping the meeting agenda on track and helping to keep the conversation on topic.

How my mastermind group transformed my business

Since joining my mastermind group my business has blossomed. Here are a few ways my mastermind group has helped me transform my business:

I know where my business is going.

A year ago I only had a vague idea of what The Brand Sketch was all about, I felt a little lost. But with the help of the group, I now have a crystal clear vision of what my brand is and where I’m headed.

Everything I do in my business supports that vision. I have a plan, a destination, and now I know I’m always heading in the right direction.

I have an awesome team supporting me.

One of the biggest issues for me in my business was that I always felt alone. It was always just me making every decision on my own. Some decisions were good, some not so much, but it was difficult and stressful not having anyone to bounce ideas off of.

In my mastermind group, I can brainstorm ideas, ask for advice, and get help. Now I feel supported like I have a team working with me.

I’m making real progress in my business.

Setting smart goals and then actually reaching them can be very difficult for solo entrepreneurs. You get sidetracked when you get busy, and then you feel like you’re not making any progress. Since you don’t report to anyone, it can get easy to dismiss your goals.

In a mastermind group, you challenge each other to set powerful goals, goals that are outside your comfort zone. Then each time you meet, you’re held accountable. Did you reach your goals? Why not? What can we do to help?
