Many patients think we cut out a huge portion of the knee and drop in a hinge.  Although we have tools to do that, that procedure is typically reserved for tumors.  Here I will try to explain to you what the actual steps are during a total knee so that you understand what occurs during a typical surgery.  Your surgeon may do things differently so it is important to have good informed consent prior to undergoing surgery.
