How Acting Like a Guy Just Might Be Necessary for Your Reputation

Listen Later

Have you ever been standing in a group of men and women, a man walks up to join the group, and he shakes the men's hands in the groups but nods to the women? Have you ever wondered why this happened, or have you chalked it up to "that's just what men do"?

This seems odd to me. I think it should to you as well. Have you ever wondered if or how that small action is perceived by those giving the handshake, those receiving it, and those not receiving it? Does the gift of the handshake convey a different message or perception to and about men versus the absence of that same handshake convey a message about women?

In business, it is imperative that we, to our best abilities, influence how we are perceived. As a woman, by not receiving a handshake from a man when men receive handshakes from other men, are we allowing a negative perception to be created or enforced about us? Are you aware that this may be happening?

Listen in to find out what underlying effects this seemingly normal male interaction may be having on your perception as a woman in the workplace. If you haven't considered this before, today is the day to do so.
