Owning anything - emotions, your responsibilities, your actions - is key to growing into becoming a responsible adult. Owning your own education is key to developing a lifestyle of learning. Starting them on this track starts early, but has far-reaching effects. Once your children realize that they don't need to be spoonfed, that they're "masters of their own fate", so to speak, there won't be any challenge they can't meet!
