Real estate is the best way to make money. And the quickest way to lose money.
At least, that’s what they say.
In reality, the property industry has its ups and downs just like any other market but what
makes it stand out from the crowd is its longevity.
But it wasn’t always the case that you could buy and sell land.
Even before you could slap a price tag on it, the earth under your feet had political sway and
power which could affect the course of history.
So how did real estate go from being owned by elites to being owned by the public...and
elites?
For most of human history, the ground was just dirt and mud. Then someone got the idea to
build a straw hut and - hey presto – real estate was invented.
Or at least, our concept of real estate. The idea of private property took a while to form.
It took so long that humans learned to domestic dogs 800 or so years before permanent
structures were erected. Even before we’d conceptualised how to buy a home, we wanted a
pet to live with. [1]
We see someone building a straw hut. But then someone runs up, yanks a tree branch out
and throws it for a dog to fetch. The straw hut collapses.
But once we figured out how to stop stuff falling over, we were set on figuring out how to
integrate buildings into society.
The oldest known established city was Jericho, in 9000 BC. It’s fair to say any concept of
property laws would be part of their customs or laws, though archaeologists are confident
from their findings that early city states often had communal aspects to land resource
management. [2]
This suggests that humans first focus was on building homes, municipal areas, infrastructure
and, of course, palaces.
That’s because the king or queen or pharaoh or sultan or whoever was in charge owned
everything.
For most of human history, property rights have been firmly in the hands of the elite.
Take Ancient Greece.
Their concept of property rights was not universal.
Only free male adults could own or inherit land, which means women and slaves were out of
the game. They were also closely tied to citizenship or social status so if you think you’ll get
on the property ladder, spare a thought for the red tape Aristotle had to cut through.
But over in Rome, things were different.
There, property law was a significant part of the Roman legal system.
For their time, it was immensely sophisticated, and has even provided the backbone for a lot
of Western law. One monumental idea was to differentiate types of property. [3]
“Dominium” meant you owned the property and “possession” meant you owned a bit of it but
could own all of it one day if certain conditions were met.
So, in essence, these were the ancient world’s equivalent of a mortgage!
In Egypt, however, land ownership was stricter.
Only the Pharaoh or upper echelons of society could get a nice little place out by the Sphinx.
Things weren’t as comfortable for the masses. Any farmer toiling in a field they didn’t own,
or wasn’t owned by their boss, had to pay a fee for the luxury to work.
Dang. Even before property rights were universal, there were landlords and rent!
It would take some time before the value of land changed, but when it did the world was
never the same again.
It’s time to learn How History Works as we chronicle the history of real estate.

The future of work is about to change. At least, for some people.
Over the last few decades, the 9-to-5 has been ridiculed for its dehumanising aspects thanks
to the iconography of cubicles, employee of the month portraits and office life. [1]
The image is now better nowadays, even with open plan offices and free Foosball tables!
That’s why for some, the 40-hour work week is a false reality, manufactured by exploitative
industries who base their reasoning on a society which no longer exists.
For others, it’s a sign of stability and prosperity which we should be thankful for now that
technology has become a great equaliser.
But whether you think the gig economy [2] will usher in financial utopia or economic
catastrophe, there’s one thing we can agree on: the 9-to-5 is a culmination of humankind’s
fusion with politics, economics and labour.
If you don’t know where it came from, you won’t know where the labour market is going.
So it's time to learn How History Works.

Exploitation, political meddling, and military aggression.
I’m not talking about the dictator of a banana republic; I’m talking about a private company whose personal army was three times that of the British army. The East India Company sounds like the sort of capitalistic nightmare ripped straight from the pages of a Philipp K Dick novel, but these guys were a real dystopian force.
Their time may be over, but their consequences of their actions shaped the world as we know it. In 1557, a few years before the unofficial Anglo-Spanish War, Francis Drake decided to explore the bank accounts of Spanish settlements in South America. [1] Once he plundered the Spanish colonies, he darted back across the Pacific Ocean, until touching down in the East Indies.
As Drake sails away, the Spanish throw things at him in anger. While travelling through the Molucca Islands he met Sultan Babullah, then ruler of the Sultanate of Ternate – one of the oldest Muslim Kingdoms in Indonesia.
This guy was the greatest of the Sultans having run out the Portuguese occupants. Under his rule, the Sultanate reached its golden peak thanks to his reign of free trade and access to valuable forest resources. [2]
For Francis Drake, the maritime door-to-door salesman, this was the perfect client. After all, both him and the Sultan shared a common enemy with the Portuguese, who were in cahoots with the Spanish.
Drake offered his linens, gold and silver. But let’s call it what it really was, ‘Evil Thing Number 1
So it’s time to understand how history works as tally up the evil crimes of the East India Company.

Hitler rose to power by bending the rules and exploiting loopholes in the fragmented political system of post-war Germany.
You know the story of what happened once he BECAME Chancellor, but how did this man get elected as Germany’s head of state… when he wasn’t even a German? After 623 years as a global player, the Ottoman Empire is wiped out for good. The Russian Empire’s 196-year stint crumbled, paving the way for the Soviets. As for the German Empire, it was cut short at just 47 years while the Austro-Hungarian Empire lasted only a bit longer at 51 years. Old Europe was dead. New Europe was getting started, made up of a patchwork of lone states or remaining empires divvying up the continent for themselves.
Everyone’s identity was in flux.
And with Germany’s humiliation and Austria’s imperial demotion, many Austrians felt disillusioned. Their sense of longing found kinship with their long-time German brothers, who too were looking for a sense of unity and strength. He knew these feelings were shared amongst his fellow Austrians, and felt by neighbouring Germans. He also knew these sentiments were kept at bay by despondency, pessimism, and harsh, economic living conditions. To anyone else, this was a sign they had lost but couldn’t accept it. But to Hitler this was the opposite. This was his first real step to bending the world to his will. In sales terms, he hadn’t just figured out what his customer wanted. He had figured out why they wanted it.
So long as he kept touching this pressure point, he’d always have supply chain to meet their demands, no matter what form their desires took.
It’s time to learn how history works as we study how Hitler ruled Germany, even though he wasn’t German.

A complex web of cash transactions, layers of separation and cunning moves kept Al Capone out of handcuffs for most of his notoriety.
But in the end, his paperless empire was exactly the paper-trail which led to his undoing. How? Because the US government couldn’t nail Capone on charges of bootlegging, extortion, or murder – so they nailed him for tax evasion.
As Saul Goodman explains to Jesse Pinkman, paying taxes is the difference between a criminal and a convict.
Heck, even the Joker knows to report his earnings.
Capone learnt the ropes early on, which paid dividends when it was his time to shine. But it was his mixture of criminality and his law-abiding nature that gave him the perfect training ground
Capone was born January 17th, 1899 to immigrant parents from Naples. Yet, he identified more as an American than as an Italian. Apparently, his patriotism was so strong that he never hesitated to correct people on his US citizenship.
No doubt this sense of pride came from his parents: Gabriele, a barber, and Teresa, a seamstress. [1]
Both worked tremendously hard to provide for their nine children. As any child of immigrant parents know, they don’t take any BS! This work ethic rubbed off on Capone so well that he was even living up to that standard when he was running with kids on the street, like the ‘Junior Forty Thieves’ and ‘Bowery Boys’. Whether it was vandalism or petty theft, Capone made sure to do wrong things the right way.
It’s time to learn How History Works as we study ‘How Al Capone’s Business Structures Kept Him Out of Prison (For A While)

If you think of the worst company misdeed and double it, you still won’t be close to the evils
of Nestle. The closest humanity has come to a rotten chocolatier is Willy Wonka, but his antics for
mistreating children pales in comparison to the tactics Nestle employs to maintain its status as
a global giant! Beneath their sweet exterior lies is a center of exploitation, greed and malpractice. And that’s
just the beginning! Wait until you get to the end of the video.
Yet, they are still standing. Is that because we see confectionary makers as eccentric artisans
or are all corporations just great at sugar-coating their sins?
Considering how the Nestle Corporation has navigated a century of scandals – the kind that
would run a politician out of office - it seems that the Swiss are experts when it comes to
chocolate, fortunes and corruption.
Maybe we’re being overly critical. Surely these transgressions are not unique to the
confectionary giant and common throughout the entire industry?
Guess again. Other mega-businesses have gone down for much less, which can only mean Nestle is as good at dodging consequences as Augustus Gloop is at dodging vegetables.
Or perhaps all the bad press around the daddy of the Kit-Kat is just a case of haters gonna hate? Maybe we’re just shills for big chocolate? You’ll have to be the judge.

Even if you’ve never heard of John Kluge, you’re definitely living in the world he created.
For a few years he was the wealthiest man in America – when he died his net worth was a
staggering $6.5 billion. That’s enough to buy the New York Knicks and still have enough
pocket change for a private island!
But the reason his legacy as a pioneering media mogul has flown under the radar for so long
is because he hated the showboating that’s so common in modern billionaires.
But Kluge knew education was going to be his key to success. He reasoned that he’d gotten
this far from what he could teach himself, then utilising a real education would take him to
great heights.
So he persuaded his step-father to let him attend high school for a single year – seriously
how many kids beg their parents to let them go to school!
Once that year was up, his step-dad forbade Kluge from attending school again so John did
the riskiest thing of his life: he ran away from home to make a name for himself.
So how did he do it?
It’s time to learn How History Works as we unearth the business wisdom of John Kluge: The
Richest Man That History Forgot.

The age-old adage reminds us, “A good king should be able to meander amongst
his subjects unarmed and unguarded.” But let's be real: history is littered with
tales of leaders who, shall we say, 'overestimated' their popularity with the
people.
Take JFK, for instance. He tragically discovered convertibles and public parades
don't mix. Then there's the Vatican's approach where Popes are ferried around
in bulletproof cases to prevent any ‘divine intervention’.
A cartoon Pope in a bulletproof bubble, blissfully unaware of small
characters (resembling Tom and Jerry) unsuccessfully trying to break the
Remember King Louis XVI of France? His grand carriage drawn by six horses
was enough for revolutionaries to sniff out his not-so-sneaky getaway. [1]
And oh, the drama that unfolded when Archduke Franz Ferdinand missed his
turning and tried to back down the road, only to discover his assassin chilling at
a café nearby, munching on a sandwich, and loading a gun.
Fast forward to our era of Instagram influencers and Twitterati, where
revealing a celeb's brunch spot can cause an uproar. Hollywood A-listers are
practically joined at the hip with their bodyguards. Even your average food
delivery guy won’t hand over your lunchtime burrito until you reveal a secret
code.
How on earth did Adolf Hitler waltz into France, claim it as his playground, and
parade down the boulevards of Paris without so much as a scratch?
The man had more assassination plots against him than series of Game of
Thrones!
It’s time to learn how history works as we run down the play-by-play of how
Hitler visited Paris without getting assassinated.

Movies suck now. Anyone who disagrees is wrong.
But the cinema being in the toilet is not because you’ve gotten older, or because
your tastes have changed. And it’s definitely not because you’re out of touch!
It’s because the world’s greatest artform has been declining ever since Louis Le
Prince shot the first film over 150 years ago, way back in 1888.
The only thing we need to ask now is whether the decline was steady sudden!
Some say we haven’t even seen how bad things can get.
Pandora may look great, but it doesn’t feel as alien – or real – as Luke Skywalker
staring up at two suns setting over the dunes of Tatooine.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
It’s time to Learn How History works as we solve how movies got to be so bad.
