There are so many communication platforms and types at the moment that some of us are getting a little confused. Not only are we getting confused but we are getting ourselves into trouble! We are misinterpreted, we are not clear in our communication, and it is landing us in the dog house!
How many of us change our communication approach, strategy and structure based on the different platforms we use. Do we use the same style when we speak, send an email or use social media? Should we?
Not only do we struggle with changing our style based on the platform we also struggle to adapt our style and approach based on the person receiving the information. Too often we communicate in the manner that we want and then get cross when the recipient gets it wrong. They get the wrong end of the stick but actually whose problem is it? Whose responsibility is it to pass the information in a way that is aligned with what you want to happen with the information. Do we talk through a blue mouth or pink mouth and do we hear through pink ears or blue ears?
In this podcast with TetraKey co-founder, Mark Hopkins, we explore this in a little more detail. Mark shares some examples of being in the doghouse purely through his lack of awareness of different platforms, assumptions and tones. He also shares his frustration with back and forward communication rather than just picking up the phone. So here is an idea, pick up the phone and have a ‘normal’ conversation, this will save so much time, heartache and frustrations.
Another thing that might help Mark is if he bites the bullet and sends an emoji for once in his life!!
