Because of Covid-19, world government, also known as cosmocracy, will happen sooner than we think. Transhumanist futurist, Ray Kurzweil, predicts world government by 2020. We’re globally in this one together. This isn’t a world war betwixt each other, either. We’re uniting against an alien virus invasion. Because it has remained dormant between non-human speciesfor ages, the zoonotic virus, Covid ,is not exactly an alien infection, but it will lead to greater social, economic, and political unity between nations.
I am not talking about a global dictatorship. I am talking about the people of Earth uniting internationally. Countries are just terrain with political boundaries. I’ve traveled to 20 countries and 5 continents; I know this! There’s different geology and ecology in that terrain but politics merely fragment humans, manufacturing the illusion that we are all disparate, insular countries. Yes, there exists different human ideals, values, and cultures, but those will remain preserved. By removing that shroud pandemic is a wake up call to us as a species that we really should be unified.
Great thinkers from presidents to poets believe cosmocracy is the way to go. When 14th century Italian poet Dante Alighieri wrote his famous “Divine Comedy”, it became known as the most significant poem from the entire Middle ages. It’s also considered to be the most significant literary work of the entire Italian language. Dante was big in his time and continues to remain highly significant at present day. From his De Monarchia, here’s what he says about world government:
“O human race! What tempests must need toss thee, what treasure be thrown into the sea, what shipwrecks must be endured, so long as thou, like a beast of many heads, strivest after diverse ends! Thou art sick in either intellect, and sick likewise in thy affection. Thou healst not thy high understanding by argument irrefutable, nor thy lower by the countenance of experience. Nor dost thou heal thy affection by the sweetness of divine persuasion, when the voice of the Holy Spirit breathes upon thee, ‘Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!’”
Like Dante, the views of the 18thpresident of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant, may not be exactly modern, but his opinions on world government are less than a century and a half old. He propounded the following: “I am convinced that the Great Framer of the World will so develop it that it becomes one nation, so that armies and navies are no longer necessary”. Already the United Nations has urged a nationwide ceasefire in Syria to channel all efforts to combatting Covid-19. We are beginning to see that maybe former president Grant’s premonition is more correct than we realize after all and that we will not need armies and navies to battle and defend ourselves from each other.
The United Nations will expand to a world government. The UN’s mission is to maintain cooperation, international peace, security, and friendly relations between nations. At the time of its founding in 1945, the UN had roughly a quarter of the world’s nations as member states. A half a century later, it encompasses practically every soveriegn nation on the planet. Give it time. Although it was just a riddle game in J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit”, time is the ultimate leveler. Tolkien wrote: “The thing all things devours; Birds, beasts, trees, flowers; Gnaws iron, bites steel; Grinds hard stones to meal; Slays king, ruins town, And beats mountain down.” The answer to the riddle is Time. Time was what was needed for the United Nations to acquire cooperation from nearly every country.
