What the Hell is My Brain Doing?

How do I navigate holiday "shoulds" and set healthy boundaries?

Listen Later

Happy 4th of July Holiday to my USA listeners!

Holidays can stir many emotions for people.

Holidays hopefully serve as a time for relaxation, celebration and reflection.

For some though, holidays are filled with “shoulds” that potentially create anxiety.

The “shoulds” might take the form of feelings of obligations.

I SHOULD want to go see family for the big celebration.

I SHOULD work myself to the bone to host a big party at my home without asking for help.

Or it might even be deeper.

I SHOULD enjoy these fireworks even though they stir up deeply painful memories and emotions.

All of these feelings come from a place of not knowing our limits and not setting appropriate boundaries.

Remember the little airplane safety video they play every time you fly in the United States?

What does it always tell you about oxygen masks?

We need to put our own oxygen mask on first before we try to help someone else.

Today we are going to talk about putting on our emotional oxygen masks first.

As I always say, Give Yourself Grace and Know Your Limits.

Come listen as we discuss the following:

• Why its ok to have different feelings about culturally accepted social obligations

• Healthy reasons why you need to prioritize yourself at times

• Ways you can start to set loving boundaries and limits with yourself and others
