Growing Scrum Masters

How do I nurture and develop coaching skills?

Listen Later

A #scrummaster plays a critical role in helping the #scrumteam create an environment where people can excel.

In essence, they are the glue that binds the #scrum team together.

In addition to servicing the #productowner, #developmentteam and organisation, the #scrummaster plays a critical role in helping the team discover the best answers to the most compelling questions and problems they face.

To do so, they need to be a great #coach in addition to being a #scrummaster.

As an #agilecoach, a #scrummaster uses a blend of #coaching, #mentoring and #teaching to help the team achieve their goals and objectives.

But how do you nurture and develop #coaching skills in the first place?

It isn't something we're taught in school nor is it something we are taught in the #certifiedscrummaster course.

We asked John McFadyen how a scrum master could nurture and develop their coaching skills, on the job, to help the team get the most out of their scrum events and artefacts.

John McFadyen has worked on some of the highest-performing scrum teams in the world as both a scrum master and agile coach.

He has also worked at the coalface of some of the UK and Europe's largest, most complex #agiletransformations so he knows a thing or two about coaching teams to achieve great performances.
