International Crisis Helplines

Dr. Juliette McClendon (they/them) is a clinical psychologist trained at Harvard and Washington University. They are an expert in the delivery of evidence-based, scalable, culturally-responsive mental healthcare, and I’m pleased to have them on to offer their clinical perspective on the development, assessment, and treatment of BPD.

In this episode, Jules and I discuss these topics:

  • Is BPD nature, or nurture? What is the biosocial model?
  • Does BPD only develop from childhood trauma?
  • What is an invalidating environment and what can it look like?
  • How is BPD assessed in clinical practice?
  • What can different levels of care look like for people with BPD?
  • What are ways professionals help a patient cultivate a support system?
  • Why it’s okay to finish treatment and need support again later
  • What is splitting, how does it happen, and why do people with BPD do it?
  • Guilt and shame that can come after you struggle with eliminating BPD-related coping mechanisms
  • Why it’s important for professionals to learn to compassionately assess and decide how to help with suicidal thoughts
  • Why it’s important for professionals to provide referrals if they cannot provide the level of care someone w BPD requires
