Last week we learned about how David was sold out betrayed by the city he risked himself to rescue.
This Sunday the story continues with a dramatic twist. The tables are suddenly turned, and David has an unexpected opportunity to take out King Saul, who had been hunting him and wanted David dead.
David’s response in finally having the upper hand is absolutely powerful. After being on the run, displaced from the privileges of the king’s son-in-law, and having to relocate his family to safety, the temptation to take revenge when the opportunity presented itself must have been tremendous. He had lived hiding out the wilderness, and even worse, as a champion warrior had been humiliating forced to ask for help from Israel’s enemies.
Now with the upper-hand and a chance to get rid of Saul once and for all, David responds in a way that probably surprised everyone that day. We’ll learn a timeless lesson from Scripture about how to respond to injustice and how to live in a way of God-fearing awe.
