How GOOD was Lyoto Machida Actually?

Lyoto Machida seemed destined to become an MMA great. The Japanese-Brazilian fighter had a dominant rise in the sport of MMA. He outclassed his opponents on the feet with the help of his karate background. And this not only lead to him racking up wins, but barely losing a round. And once he captured UFC gold, it really seemed like he would hold onto it for a very long time. But he lost it after one title defense and although he was close to winning it back both at light heavyweight and middleweight, he was unable to and now a days he’s a shell of his former self. So how good was Lyoto Machida actually?
