The greatest business skill you may possess today is the ability to empathize with your audience. Sympathy is recognizing someone is struggling or experiencing difficulty and feeling for them. Empathy is when you put yourself in their shoes. You understand the anger, joy, frustration, sadness, or disappointment they’re experiencing and you can reflect that feeling back to them through your body language or words.
Having empathy for your clients is showing you understand what they’re feeling right now. It’s proving to your clients there’s nothing more important in your business than what they’re feeling and wanting to experience. That’s true empathy - the ability to see your client as a human first with goals, dreams, and desires they so badly want to see come to life.
Your client wants to be seen, known, and valued for who they are and for what’s important to them. Anyone can say the right words, but if you can demonstrate you value what they value, the sky’s the limit. That’s what it means to serve your clients. That’s the power of empathy.
