How Indoor Navigation and Positioning Systems Work

Listen Later

Indoor navigation and positioning systems make it possible to detect and track your location in indoor environments like railway stations, museums, shopping malls, and airports.

A common way of classifying indoor navigation and positioning systems is based on the underlying radio technology, e.g., Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), and Ultra-Wideband.

Behind these technologies are different data collection techniques and position estimation methods that make them work. In this episode, I’ll be breaking down the “how” behind the “wow” of indoor navigation and positioning.

Summary of Key Points:

  • What Is Navigation?—And How is it Different From Positioning?
  • Measurement Techniques Used by Indoor Positioning Systems
  • Position Estimation Methods Used by Indoor Positioning Systems
  • Underlying Technologies in Indoor Navigation and Positioning Systems
  • Cost vs. Accuracy: WI-FI, Bluetooth, and UWB
