The prophet Habakkuk was troubled by the ungodly life of the nation of Judah whose kings had led God’s people into a downward spiral of sin and violence. In his frustration with the events of the world and in the evil violence going on in the city of Jerusalem Habakkuk went to God in prayer asking, “Where are You Lord? God where is Your justice for the poor, the hungry, the downtrodden, the lost, the abused and the persecuted? God, why haven’t You stepped in to stop all this from happening?”
God responded to Habakkuk saying, “I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if I told you.” In the conversation between God and His faithful prophet we learn that God’s plan doesn’t often match the plans we have for dealing with the injustice of this world. So, what happens to our faith when we learn God’s plan is so radically different than what we want Him to do? How can we trust Jesus with what is going on in our lives and in the world when we aren’t sure we can trust His plans?
As Habakkuk wrestled with God’s answers to his hard questions, this faithful prophet composed a new song that he lifted up to God. He cried out, “Lord, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds…renew them in our day, in our time make them known...as I heard your words and my heart pounded; my lips quivered, decay crept into my bones and my legs trembled…BUT I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior. The Sovereign Lord is my strength!” (Habakkuk 3:2, 16,18-19)
My dear friends in Christ as we look around the turmoil of this world this Advent season, let us turn our hearts toward heaven and cry out in a collective voice, “God, we know Your plans are greater than ours, help us trust in You, help us live by faith (Hab. 2:4), believing You are in control and Your plans will not be thwarted no matter how wicked the world becomes. Help us Jesus to trust in You, to be thankful and joyful in the midst of the evil tyranny of this world! Help us stand together and surrender our anxieties and pain, our depression and hopelessness, our anger and confusion, to You Oh God! Help us believe in and hold onto Your promise that one day Jesus will come again to rescue Your people!”
