Covid-19 has everyone chasing for the secret recipe to efficient "remote" working. Journals, webinars and livestreams focusing on this hot topic are springing up like mushrooms. However, there are some who have nailed this long before the pandemic.
One would be Matt Mullenweg, CEO of Automattic and creator of Wordpress, the world's largest open source website builder which powers 1/3rd of the top 10 million websites globally. One third! Let that sink in for a moment. Matt and the 1,000+ ''Automatticians'' (namely, Automattic team members) are entirely distributed, spread over 65+ countries, speaking 75+ different languages. 'We don’t care where they are'', he explained in the Ted: The Way We Work series. All of his headquarters have been closed long before Corona. Having a flexible work choice has been paramount to Automattic's “nomadic” culture.
With more than $600M raised (at a valuation of $3Bn) Matt has built one of the most promising tech companies around, all without a central office. And Automattic is not alone. Gitlab, Zapier, InVision... the list of fully distributed Unicorn startups is growing. So how does one implement distributed work in a way that is conducive to success? And will the Covid-19 crisis forever change the way we work?
Listen to Matt's fireside chat with TOA founder Niko Woischnik on remote work & distributed companies.
