How members of the health care system will implement a ‘Zero Suicide’ project

Christopher Lucas, MD, talks about the role Upstate and Onondaga County will play in implementing a "Zero Suicide" grant from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The five-year grant is meant to support health systems that commit to systematically integrate suicide prevention. The goal is to reduce suicide deaths among those receiving care. Lucas, an associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Upstate, explains that the demonstration project will involve professionals from throughout the health care system who will learn to identify people at risk for suicide. Short-term intervention and longer-term engagement will also be part of the training.
