In order to prosper, a society needs certain rules and governance to promote peace, order, and the principles of justice. Most agree that we need a way to secure individual rights and protect against violations. When should we look to government to provide essential goods and services, and when should we rely on personal responsibility and the market process? What can we learn from the American experiment about the proper role of government and the effectiveness of our government’s record of protecting the rights enshrined in the Constitution?
