The OAsis Academic Adventures

How Nigerian students are using ChatGPT

Listen Later

What happens when a generation of students can outsource parts of their thinking to AI?

In this episode of the OAsis Academic Adventures Podcast, Ola Arowolo speaks with selected undergraduate students from Nigeria’s Centre of Excellence, examining how ChatGPT is being integrated into everyday academic practice. From research and assignments to presentations and self-directed learning, this conversation moves beyond surface narratives to explore how students are actively negotiating the role of artificial intelligence in their education.

“Ó sọ Yorùbá sí, ó máa dá ẹ lóhùn.” (If you speak Yoruba, it responds.)
This reflection captures one of the defining advantages of AI, accessibility across language and context. Yet, alongside this opportunity sits a more complex reality.

Students discuss how AI supports efficiency and expands access to knowledge, while also raising concerns about overreliance, reduced depth of engagement, and the risk of mistaking summarised output for genuine understanding. The episode critically examines the tension between productivity and intellectual development, asking what it means to learn in an environment where information can be instantly processed, condensed, and reproduced.

Key themes include:
◼️Practical ways students are using ChatGPT for academic tasks
◼️The ethical boundaries between support and misconduct
◼️The impact of AI on research habits and critical thinking
◼️Digital literacy as a core competency in AI-enabled learning
◼️Implications for assessment, teaching, and institutional policy

At its core, this episode raises a fundamental question: if students achieve outcomes without fully engaging with the process, how sustainable is that knowledge when it is tested, applied, or defended?
