How Night Owls can Work in a Morning World

Listen Later

Super early morning phone calls, meetings for breakfast, or just the coffee machine turning off by noon is what makes the work world prefer early risers.
You know those people who are always jump out of bed with full glee and wind down just as the sun does.
The opposite a.k.a. night owls ride a wave of the afternoon to well into the night.
Robert Matchock, Ph.D From Penn State Altoona who researches physiology and behavior says they are biological difference between the people who are productive in the morning versus at night.
There’s a hormone melatonin that makes the morning productive people more awake. The night time people have have a higher core temperature as the day goes on.
Most are actually in between productivity in morning and afternoon. The reason it seems is that it’s in genetics. Morning people usually don’t wake up with any grogginess or loss in inertia. Night people noticeable do and wake up later to have higher productivity later as the day is shorter.
Unfortunately there’s no study that says it’s possible to change yourself into a morning or night person. Our internal clock. So it looks like we’re stuck with who we are.
That’s not bad though, it’s now understanding the strengths and weaknesses of it rather than blame it for any short comings. You can still do well out your job at any time of day as long as you make adjustments in your habits and routine.
Here’s some tips that help that
1. Make a cheatsheet the day before
If you’re a night owl, you’re probably not full awaken when you start working. I know because that’s how I feel. Instead of waiting it out to boost productivity, take a moment in your night to plan out what to do so you don’t have to spend time thinking about what should be doing as of right now.
The thing about lists is you need to make them as detailed as possible. No one looked down on a concrete roadmap and whatever makes success easier to achieve.
2. Get your morning routine down
By taking your shower, picking out your clothes, having your breakfast ready. You notice there’s several things you do each morning.
By having them down in the most convenient order really does add up more time to your day. Even can make you have more time to sleep.
Based on science this can help drastically in mood and productivity.
3. Do the auto pilot projects first
Not every project requires the same amount of effort. So it’s best to plan out what projects you’ll have the time and energy for.
I use night time for all my writing because it’s the most energy intensive of finding research, brainstorming ideas, and writing them out.
So use tasks that don’t require much energy in the early morning and vice versa for morning people.
Emails, reading news, anything creative usually is the downtime that helps with these tasks.
4. Use the tough tasks for your optimal energy
The serious work, the work thats going to put most effort in is what you want on your best time of day.
Matchock says that scheduling times with people in just late mornings makes a huge difference for the night owls.
He recommends to have late morning meetings before lunch, or late afternoon because of the lower alertness and glucose levels from food can make it tricky.
5. Maybe bring some work home
I say maybe because this isn’t the best solution if you’re already dealing with a problematic work/life balance. Elene Cafasso, president of Executive Coaching says people who like to work late should reserve their energy for 7-9pm for the heavy tasks.
That could mean taking your work home, but it could be worth it when you need it done in the best way possible.
Putting that time in makes perfect sense for the night person, but it can hamper the time you need to wake up though.
Having to go to bed at 1am due to work to wake up at 7 or 8am can seem unproductive though. So you have to be careful.
6. See if you can start working later or even form home
Since an extra hour of sleep can make all the difference it may be best to ask or see if it
