THINK BEFORE YOU SLEEP

How People Are Being Radicalized

Listen Later

A young man watches a video about economic inequality. The algorithm suggests another video, then another, then another. Six months later, he is posting manifestos online and planning violence. He did not start as a monster. He was radicalized one click at a time.

In this episode, I uncover the mechanisms of modern radicalization. The process follows a predictable pattern called the staircase model: first, the individual feels a grievance, real or perceived. Second, the individual is exposed to an ideology that explains the grievance and identifies an enemy. Third, the individual is connected to a community that reinforces the ideology and normalizes extreme views. Fourth, the individual is encouraged to take action, starting with small acts of solidarity and escalating to violence. The internet has accelerated this process dramatically. In the past, radicalization required face-to-face meetings in basements and back rooms. Now, algorithms do the recruiting for extremists. The same technology that suggests movies and products suggests content that is slightly more extreme than what you just watched. The shift is gradual, barely noticeable, and incredibly effective. The targets are not the mentally ill or the obviously unstable. The targets are lonely, angry, and alienated individuals searching for meaning. The radicalizers offer purpose, community, and a clear enemy to blame. By the time the individual realizes what is happening, they are already too deep to climb back out. Turn down the lights, put on your headphones, and press play because the person who becomes a radical was once someone who just wanted to be understood.
