It's hard to believe, but the landmark Roebling Suspension Bridge could have been torn down just thirty years after it opened. The bridge was in need of repairs in order to accommodate the growing dependence on electric streetcars. But, one engineer's bold proposal stood out from the others who recommended razing. Instead, the bridge would be strengthened in a project that made it what we know today.
