Adult Development is a theory by Robert Kegan which stated that, throughout the lifespan of an individual we can go through 5 different phases of maturation. These five are:
Stage 1 — Impulsive mind (early childhood)
Stage 2 — Imperial mind (adolescence, 6% of adult population)
Stage 3 — Socialized mind (58% of the adult population)

Kegan got this model from a mix of previous psychologists such as Maslow, Erikkson, and Carl Jung. The principle idea is that maturation occurs when we transform our view of the world from us being the center of the universe to others. It is not about our knowledge base but more about our perception. One of the biggest changes in maturation occurs between stages 2 and 3 when we begin to take ownership of our own thoughts, values, identity, and meaning instead of what we have assimilated from others.
