In life, most of us grow up being told that we can only follow a certain path. That we must study hard in school and follow certain career paths, so we can grow up to be successful people in society. So most of us come up with the mindset that we can only focus on certain areas of study, so we can fit into certain careers, and when somewhere along the line we’ve achieved all that, but we’re not happy with the way our lives are, it becomes near impossible to leave what we have to venture into something else that can make us happy and more fulfilled.
In this episode, Eddie and I have a conversation with Goli Kalkhoran, a lawyer-turned-entrepreneur and the host of the Lessons from a Quitter Podcast where she tells the stories of people who have left the corporate world to pursue their dreams. Goli’s is a self-professed perfectionist and steered her life based upon the praise of others. When she realized that it was her concern for other people’s opinions that kept her from leaving the career she hated, she had a decision to make. She could either live a life that pleases others, or live the life she was capable of. After practicing law for 6 years, she obviously chose the latter.
She was a lawyer that was stressed, overworked and unfulfilled. The thought of doing legal work for years until her retirement made her sick to her stomach and seemed unimaginable. But so did quitting. For her, being a lawyer was such a big part of her identity. She had known from a very early age that’s what she wanted to do, and she had invested so much time and money into her education, that the thought of not being a lawyer didn’t seem like a real possibility. But finally, one day, with a push from her husband and a host of other things, she quit and started on her journey into entrepreneurship.
Goli will share how hard it is to realize you’ve spent your entire life driving for a singular goal only to realize how miserable you truly are, and talk about just how crippling a perfectionist mindset can be. She will also share all the valuable wisdom and lessons she learned from quitting. So if you’ve been wondering how you can go after the life you truly desire, then this episode is perfect for you. It will definitely give you the push you need to go for it. Enjoy.
