Sermon Notes—“Overcomers - How to be Done with Sin”
“We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.”
Colossians 1:28 (NIV)

Lesson Text

1 Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same purpose, because he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2 so as to live the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for the lusts of men, but for the will of God. 3 For the time already past is sufficient for you to have carried out the desire of the Gentiles, having pursued a course of sensuality, lusts, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties and abominable idolatries. 4 In all this, they are surprised that you do not run with them into the same excesses of dissipation, and they malign you; 5 but they will give account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 6 For the gospel has for this purpose been preached even to those who are dead, that though they are judged in the flesh as men, they may live in the spirit according to the will of God.
1 Peter 4:1–6 (NASB)

The message: Close the book on SIN! (1 Pe 4:1-3)

9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.
1 Corinthians 6:9–11 (NASB)

3 For we also once were foolish ourselves, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another. 4 But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, 5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,

Titus 3:3–5 (NASB)

Whether you close the book or not, there’s a CONSEQUENCE to your decision. (1 Pe 4:4-5)

Earthly consequence of righteous living: MAN'S judgment
Eternal consequence of sinful living: GOD'S judgment
Since you’re going to be judged but somebody, WHOSE JUDGMENT are you willing to live with?

Arming yourself with Christ’s purpose (4:1) means you’d rather SUFFER than be DISOBEDIENT to God.

If you don’t first DENY your FLESH privately, you won’t DENY the WORLD publicly.

23 And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.

Luke 9:23 (NASB)

By itself, SUFFERING doesn’t enable you to defeat sin.

Committing yourself to being obedient to God whether SUFFERING or not is how to be done with sin.
