Many of us think of the "comfort zone" as a relic of '80s motivational psychology. Though in fact, the comfort zone is a pretty useful psychological concept that can help you embrace risk and make changes in your life that can lead to real personal growth. So what is the “Comfort Zone?” A comfort zone is a psychological state in which things feel familiar to a person and they are at ease and in control of their environment, experiencing low levels of anxiety and stress. ... It has been as "a behavioural state where a person operates in an anxiety-neutral position." The idea of optimal anxiety isn't anything new. Anyone who's ever pushed themselves to get to the next level or accomplish something knows that when you really challenge yourself, you can turn up amazing results.  However, pushing too hard can actually cause a negative result, and reinforce the idea that challenging yourself is a bad idea. It's our natural tendency to return to an anxiety neutral, comfortable state. You can understand why it's so hard to kick your brain out of your comfort zone. Even so, your comfort zone is neither a good or bad thing. It's a natural state that most people trend towards. Leaving it means increased risk and anxiety, which can have positive and negative results (which we'll get to in a moment), but don't demonise your comfort zone as something holding you back. We all need that head-space where we're least anxious and stressed so we can process the benefits we get when we leave it. We've come to see stress as a dirty word - and for good reason, but a little bit of healthy stress can actually act as a catalyst for growth and provide a powerful motivation to act. Within our comfort zones, generally speaking, there's little stress.  Psychologically, our comfort zone is the place we're most at home. While staying in your comfort zone can result in consistent, steady performance, stepping out of your comfort zone into a new and challenging task can create the conditions for optimal performance.  Think about it: Did you ever do something you were really proud of when you were in autopilot mode? As always, thank you so much for tuning in. I really hope this helped. Hey, have I missed anything here though?  Resources mentioned in this episode: Man Up: How to Cut the Bullshit and Kick Ass in Business (and in Life) After years of coaching and consulting hundreds of startup rookies as well as seasoned entrepreneurs, executives, and CEOs, Bedros Keuilian realized that most people who want to start a business, grow an existing business, author a book, make more money, or make a bigger impact usually take the long, slow, painful way to get there . . . and more than 80 percent of entrepreneurs never get to their desired destination or achieve their full potential in business.
