SHOW NOTES

How to Change Your Mindset

-The term “networking” feels sleazy and false, don’t think about it as that. Think about it as community, relationship, or friendship building because it’s not just about having a quick one-off conversation but rather about truly getting to know someone and learning from them.

The Importance of Networking

-Whether you have an awful experience at work or a dream that you really want to achieve, having a strong network to be able to tap into for support or resources and be there for as well is extremely helpful and rewarding.

Use Social Media

-It’s not just about posting a ton, it’s about really engaging and connecting as well as bringing your connection into the real world. Direct message anyone that you’ve been engaging with online or just think is interesting and ask if they would want to meet for coffee or hop on a call.

-Being vulnerable is your best friend, the more personal stuff is what people really connect with and what will drive up your engagement.

-If you look at some of the sales leaders with huge brands like Scott Leese, they don’t talk about the products they sell or the industry in which they sell them, they talk about their role and experience as a sales leader.

Events

-Depending on your mindset, events can be extremely helpful for growing your network. Go into them with the quality over quantity mentality. It’s not about how many people you can shake hands with and quickly give your business card to, but rather focusing on having meaningful conversations.

Following Up

-Don’t let someone that’s extremely successful or really well-respected intimidate you to the point of avoiding or waiting for them to contact you. Reach out, it’s okay to be persistent and send multiple messages.

Be Consistent

-Thinking someone is interesting and wanting to know more about the work that they do is reason enough to reach out.

-Maybe you set aside a budget for grabbing coffee each month and get to know people from different departments of your own company, people in similar roles at different companies, or people that have a great social media presence. Whatever you do, be consistent and disciplined about taking the time to network.
