Listen Later

More runners are attempting to tackle the marathon distance each year. Whether it’s a runners first marathon or 10th, one thing all runners have in common is that we want to do and feel our very best. One important variable to be able to do that is a structured, indivualized, and intentional marathon program. So, in this episode, run coach and Olympic Trials Qualifier, Jon Mott discusses how to build your perfect marathon program…

  • Generally, what are some requirements to consider before even committing to the marathon distance
  •  How long is a normal training block for a marathon?
  • What are some key workouts that are important for marathon runners to do during training, explain what makes these workouts important to focus on for the marathon distance
    • How to periodize a perfect marathon program  goals you focus on every few weeks, how many buildup weeks vs drop down weeks, training considerations within that block
  • When should a plan hit peak mileage in a training cycle?
  • When should a taper start and what should that look like?
  • Do runners need to run 26 miles to run a marathon?
  • Do runners need to run 20 miles to run a marathon?

Coach and professional runner Jon Mott has been involved in running, whether it be coaching or competing, for the last 19 years.
